Marian Young is the President of BrightFields, Inc. in Wilmington, Delaware. She received her B.S. in Agronomy from Delaware Valley College of Science & Agriculture in 1980, and continued graduate studies in Hydrogeology and Soil Chemistry at the University of Delaware. She was employed for 15 years by Roy F. Weston, Inc. and 9 years by WIK Associates, Inc. as an environmental soil scientist, project manager, and department manager. Marian gained her brownfield investigation and remediation experience from the Federal Government’s Base Realignment Program, which converted Army, Navy, and Air Force Bases into commercial and industrial uses. In 2003, Marian and her partner, Mark Lannan, formed BrightFields, Inc. with a commitment to excellence, growth, and sustainability. They built their office on a former landfill, have solar panels on the roof, compost their office paper and food waste, and use it in their raised bed vegetable gardens. BrightFields has grown into a mid-Atlantic firm focusing on environmental investigation, remediation, demolition, restoration, and compliance. The company has been listed on Zweig Hot Firms, the Inc. 5000, Best Places to Work, and Marian and Mark were recognized by the Small Business Administration in 2008 and 2014 as Delaware’s Small Business Persons of the Year. Marian led the environmental investigation and remediation of the Christina Riverfront, working closely with the State of Delaware, the City of Wilmington, private sector clients and non-profits to investigate, manage and remediate contaminated soil and groundwater during the construction of roads, utilities, commercial and residential developments and parks, including the 20-acre South Wilmington Wetland. She is active in the Delaware State and New Castle County Chambers of Commerce, the Society of Women Environmental Professionals, serves on the board of The Delaware Nature Society, and chairs the Delaware Energy & Sustainability Leaders Roundtable. As one of the founders of the CBR4 Team – Christina & Brandywine Rivers Remediation, Restoration & Resilience – her vision is to restore these urban rivers to fishable and swimmable quality.
